When the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recognizes one Subaru model as a Top Safety Pick it's a good thing. When IIHS recommends four Subaru models, that's really something.

In the 2008 IIHS awards, four Subaru models were designated as Top Safety Picks: the Tribeca and Impreza and the Forester and Legacy equipped with available VDC.

And although we're proud of this distinction, we can’t say we’re entirely surprised. After all, safety is at the heart of everything we do. It’s in our DNA. It’s why the majority of safety features inside a Subaru are standard, regardless of the model.

	Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive [STANDARD] All-wheel drive isn't unique. But Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is. Its ideal balance ensures stability and poise and its efficiency at transmitting power ensures greater grip and quick response to slippage. Providing more than just safety on slick roads, it delivers intensified performance on any road. All-wheel drive is not just our heritage - it's our passion.
	4-channel, 4-sensor Antilock Disc Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD)[STANDARD] Working in conjunction with the 4-channel, 4-sensor ABS, EBD maximizes stopping power by optimally apportioning power front to rear under heavy braking. So you're better equipped to stop when you need to stop.
	Daytime Running Lights (DRL) Daytime Running Lights (DRL) are low beams that illuminate during the daytime in an effort to improve contrast and make the vehicle easier to see. Studies have shown that DRLs have helped reduce fatal and nonfatal collisions between oncoming vehicles by about 5 percent and fatal collisions between vehicles traveling in the opposite direction by about 23 percent.
	4-wheel Independent Suspension The Subaru 4-wheel independent suspension makes sure you're ready for any driving condition. Its low-friction design and specific spring and shock absorber tuning help keep the four wheels in contact with any road surface, paved or unimproved, making the most efficient use of All-Wheel Drive. Because each wheel functions independently, unexpected dips and bumps are no problem. The suspension easily absorbs road irregularities, so each tire stays right where it belongs - on the road.
	Vehicle Dynamics Control(VDC) This feature is standard on the Tribeca, Forester, WRX and WRX STI models, and on certain Outback, Legacy and Impreza models. This stability system helps keep you on your intended path by measuring variables such as steering input, braking, and vehicle angle. Sensing any slide that causes the vehicle to deviate from your intended course, VDC applies individual brakes and / or reduces engine power to help counteract the slide and help keep you safely in control.
	Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Standard on Tribeca, Outback, Legacy, and WRX STI models, this system measures air pressure in each tire. A dash-mounted indicator light informs the driver that a tire's pressure has dropped below a safe level. The system turns on between 9 and 22 miles per hour and measures air pressure in all tires at one-minute intervals.

Comprised of higher-strength steel, the Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame, dual side-impact door beams (which help prevent intrusions into the vehicle), and front and rear crumple zones (which help redistribute impact energy away from the driver and passengers) combine to offer an exceptionally safe environment.
	Height-adjustible 3-point Front Seat Belts with Pretensioners and Force Limiters[STANDARD] A safer seat belt makes for a safer car. That's why Subaru vehicles come standard with height-adjustable front seat belts that feature pretensioners and load limiters, which respectively tighten the belts on impact and release the belts slightly to help reduce stress on the torso.
	Energy-absorbing Collapsible Steering Column[STANDARD] In the event of an accident, the steering column is designed to absorb energy and minimize force impact by collapsing toward the front of the car. This helps to reduce chance of body injury to passengers.
	Subaru Boxer Engine Placement[STANDARD] Designed with breakaway sheer bolts on the engine mounts, the low placement of the Boxer engine inside a Subaru helps minimize engine intrusion into the passenger cabin.
	Height-adjustable Active Front-seat Head Restraints In the event of a rear-end collision, the active front-seat head restraints provide another layer of protection. They automatically move forward to cradle your head to help minimize the possibility of whiplash.
	Seat-mounted Front Side-impact Air Bags (SRS)+ Mounted on the front seats, they provide protection regardless of your ideal seat position. Designed to protect both your head and torso, they helped the Forester achieve the highest possible rating in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests.
	Safety Brake Pedal System The pedal assembly is designed to yield in a moderate-to-severe frontal impact, helping to reduce injury to the driver's lower limbs.

	Rear Child-Safety Door Locks To keep your children safely inside, rear child-safety door locks allow you to control whether your children can open the door from inside the car. Locks can be set individually for each door.
	Internal Child-Safety Trunk Release with Self-illuminating Handle In the event that a child or adult becomes locked inside the trunk of the car, every Subaru sedan comes with a standard trunk release handle that's self-illuminated and designed to allow the child or adult to open the trunk lid from inside the trunk.
	LATCH System: Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children LATCH is a system mandated by the federal government in an effort to standardize and simplify the installation of child restraints without using a vehicle's seat belt system. It allows for more secure positioning of a child safety seat, thus providing a safer environment.
	Advanced Frontal Airbag System (SRS)+ In some models, an occupant detection sensor for the front passenger seat determines the weight of the occupant in that seat. The system will automatically enable the frontal air bag when occupied by an adult, illuminating the ON indicator light on the dashboard. When the seat is empty or occupied by a child, the system is disabled, illuminating the OFF indicator light.
